How To Take Care of Your Cat While You Are Away

Some people think that cats are great pets to have because they are aloof and require little attention. That isn’t necessarily the case, however. Some cats have an aloof personality, but other cats require and will seek out attention and affection fro their parents. Leaving a cat at home for long periods without attention can be disastrous for their health and even your house. Just like how an upset or angry dog can chew things up – a cat can cause the same kind of havoc within a house. Cats can eat plants, chew furniture, get in the trash and make a mess just as big as a dog’s mess. How can you keep them from doing that?

Have Your Neighbors Check

When you are going away for a weekend trip, ask a neighbor to check in on your cat. Your neighbor can come over and feed the cat and add any water to their bowls when needed. They could also stay for a minute and offer a bit of company and attention to your pet. Your neighbor can also make sure the conditions in your house are comfortable if there is a temperature or weather change outside.

Chances are, when you are gone for a day or two your cat will be okay if you take the proper precautions with it. That would mean leaving out a couple of bowls of water, setting out enough food to last the length of your trip and having an adequate temperature in your house. You don’t need to leave windows open, but make sure the air conditioning is still on if it is supposed to hit 80 degrees or higher. During the winter, make sure the temperature will be above 64 degrees and that your cat has blankets and a place to cuddle up. Taking Care of a Cat While You Are Away

Take Them To a Kennel

When you are traveling and don’t trust neighbors enough to care for your cat, head to a kennel. There are vets and boarding kennels that care for cats just like they would dogs. The cats are kept in separate kennels from each other. You can take in their own bedding, their food and a couple of toys to remind them of home. Your cat will need special medicine in order to be permitted in the kennel. Once the kennel has proof of their shots and checks to see that they have no fleas, they are good to go.

DayCare

When you are gone all day long with work, you might want to check in to pet day care. Pet daycares are becoming popular for people who don’t have anyone in the house during the day to take care of the pet. Kids need care during the day, so why shouldn’t your pet? They will get food, water, play time and even nap time if they need it. Check to see how many cat day care centers are near you with openings to take your cat.
